2018 Provider Information sessions

To facilitate the collection of the 2018 TPS Levy, the TPS Director Mr Vipan Mahajan will be conducting information sessions for all CRICOS providers. The sessions will be held in late February 2018 to early March in Melbourne, Hobart, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and Canberra.

The sessions will inform CRICOS providers about the proposed changes to the 2018 TPS Levy collection.

It is anticipated that the collection of the 2018 TPS Levy will be similar to previous years, with invoices sent out in April 2018 and payment due by May 2018. For a list of frequently asked questions regarding the 2018 TPS Levy, please click here .

Following the TPS Levy information session, providers will also receive updates on:

  • The recent reforms to the Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) framework, including the implementation of the National Code of Practice for Providers of Education and Training to Overseas Students 2018 and the ELICOS Standards 2018; and
  • Recent work of the Overseas Students Ombudsman and their role (Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Perth sessions only)

* Hobart - Thursday 22nd February 2018 (10am - 12pm)
* Sydney - Wednesday 28th February (10am - 12pm) or (2pm - 4pm)

* Perth - Wednesday 7th March 2018 (10am - 12pm)
* Adelaide - Thursday 8th March 2018 (10am - 12pm)
* Canberra - Friday 9th March 2018 (10am - 12pm)

Sher-E-Punjab Pty Ltd trading as South Pacific Institute

The Tuition Protection Service (TPS) has been advised that Sher-E-Punjab Pty Ltd trading as South Pacific Institute (SPI) has stopped teaching its international students as of Monday 29 January 2018.

SPI has advised the TPS that it is making arrangements for providing assistance its students, by either placing affected students with another provider or providing the student with a refund of any unspent tuition fees.

If you are an international student of this institute, we encourage you to seek assistance from SPI in the first instance.

Study Group Australia Pty Ltd

As an international student, studying with Study Group Australia, you may be aware of action taken by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA). You may have also come across some media coverage about this action against Study Group Australia. Please note this decision only affects students who are studying in Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses.

If you are an international student undertaking Higher Education, Higher Education Foundation (pathway) or English Language courses (ELICOS); please note, you and your courses of study are not affected by this decision.

TAFE SA

The Tuition Protection Service (TPS) is aware that the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) has taken regulatory action against TAFE SA [00092B] resulting in the suspension of four courses they deliver to international students.

TAFE SA is able to continue to teach international students enrolled in the four affected courses but is unable to enrol any new students. The affected courses are:

  • Certificate III in Commercial Cookery [094563J]
  • Certificate III in Hairdressing [094561M]
  • Certificate III in Individual Support [090839G]
  • Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) [085427C]

If you are an international student currently enrolled in one of these affected courses with TAFE SA and have any concerns or questions about continuation of your studies, you are encouraged to contact TAFE SA directly in the first instance.

Complex Institute of Education Pty Ltd

The Tuition Protection Service (TPS) is aware that Complex Institute of Education Pty Ltd trading as Complex Training Academy was placed into administration on 27 September 2017.

The administrator appointed is Mathew Grossman at Grant Thornton Australia in Melbourne.

The TPS was advised that the provider has suspended all classes until further notice.

Institute of Hotel Management Australia

On 8 August 2017, the TPS was notified by the Australian Skills Quality Authority that on 4 August 2017 Australian Institute of Trades Pty Ltd as Trustee for the Institute of Hotel Management Australia (IHMA) registration was cancelled as a RTO and international education provider (CRICOS). Therefore, IHMA cannot continue to teach with effect from 4 August 2017.

IHMA is now required to place studying students with another provider or provide a refund of the unspent tuition fee. IHMA is required to do this by no later than 18 August 2017.

ESOS Refund Calculations Instrument

The Education Services for Overseas Students (Calculation of Refund) Specification 2014 (refund specification) takes effect from 1 July 2014. The refund specification is available on the Federal Register of Legislation website. This refund specification combines the previous two legislative instruments that were in operation. The refund specification is simpler and more clearly articulates refund calculations in cases of visa refusal and where there is no compliant written agreement between the education provider and the student.
